Air quality assessment

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) - Air Cleaner - Air Test

Air quality assessment involves a number of components, including:

  • collecting and validating air quality and meteorological data;
  • compiling emissions inventories;
  • modelling air quality and meteorological data; and
  • analyzing the data, inventories and models in combination with other environmental and health data.

The purpose of this assessment is to determine the concentrations of air pollutants, the sources of air pollutants, the impact of air quality on the environment and the risk to human health from air pollutants.

Air Quality Monitoring
Air quality monitoring in British Columbia is conducted by the provincial government, Metro Vancouver, and industry (where required by permit) in cooperation with Environment Canada and regional districts. There are approximately 150 air quality monitoring stations throughout British Columbia. The Network Description page has more detailed information on the provincial air monitoring network.

These stations monitor for a variety of air contaminants, including carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), sulphur dioxide (SO2), and hydrogen sulphide (H2S). The data are reported as raw parameters, and are also used to calculate air quality indexes.
